Why its more important than ever to look at nutrition labels


In the coming weeks many of you will make the shift into a healthier lifestyle. Many of you will focus on eating “health” foods and most you of will do so without ever actually taking the time to read the nutrition label. So why look at the label if its a healthy food? Because most of you don’t have a proper understanding of what this actually means.


Case in point, the perception that muffins are healthy or good for you. This specific muffins are 650 calories per serving! Now it’s incredibly common for someone to say “but i only ate 2 muffins today, how am i not losing weight?!’ Well that because you just consumed 1,300 calories and if you’re working a desk job and you’re not active outside of work, you likely just consumed all your calories for the day. 


Secondly, we need to realize, that it doesn’t matter how healthy a food is perceived to be, its impossible to lose weight if you’re still in a calorie surplus. No amount of “health” food can break the laws of thermodynamics. Weight loss can only be established by a negative energy balance.


More importantly, you must understand, NO food is inherently good or bad for you, healthy or unhealthy. You can literally eat ANYTHING, lose weight and improve health. However, we should be striking a balance of more nutritional foods as well as hyper palatable ones, for the best long term success and sustainability.
