The Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change. What is it? This is a tool and understanding to screen and identify how likely a given person is to change. How long it may take to change. What the barriers to change are. How to best go about behavior modification and how likely relapse may be.
Precontemplation - Being uninformed or underinformed, Multiple unsuccessful attempts at change can lead to demoralization about ability to change. Characterized as resistant, unmotivated, or not ready for traditional health intervention programs.
Contemplation - more aware of the pros of changing but are also acutely aware of the cons. Weighing the costs and benefits of change can produce profound ambivalence that may cause long term procrastination.
Preparation - these people are intending to take action in the immediate future, such as joining an exercise class, consulting a counselor, talking to their physician or buying a self-help book. Prime candidates for traditional weight loss programs.
Action - Specific and significant lifestyle changes have been made in the last 6 months that has sufficient reduction to risk for disease.
Maintenance - Actively working to prevent relapse and have grown increasingly more confident with greater self efficiency lasting up to 5 years.
