New healthy food compass, harmful or helpful?

The new scientific Food Compass seeks to quantify “healthy” and “unhealthy” food, but does it hurt more than it helps?

Recently some nutrition science researchers attempted to quantify individual foods healthfulness on a score of 0 to 100 based on multitude of variables.

The 8,000 individual food items were scored based on their fiber, protein, vitamins, minerals, nutrition ratio, lipids, ingredients, additives and processing per 100 calorie.

Food and drink scores of 70+ are encouraged

Food and drink scores of 31-69 = moderation

Food and drink scores -30 should minimized

While designed with good intentions, frosted Cheerios scored a 73, while lean chicken breast only received a 52, it’s entire possible this new system isn’t valid.

Ultimately, there’s a reason why nutrition science doesn’t recognize clean eating or the concept that food is inherently good or bad for a reason. It’s this over simplification of black and white thinking of food that ultimately destroys people relationship with food in the first place.
